FLAMES IN THE FLINT HILLS

a Range Burning Event

HOT FIRE, HOT FOOD, HOT MUSIC!

In the Kansas Flint Hills, burning the prairie is an annual rite of spring. Mother Nature began prairie wildfires thousands of years ago. Native Americans continued the practice of range burning to manage the herds of buffalo. Today, range burning in Kansas kicks off the cattle grazing season in the beautiful Flint Hills.

Few people have witnessed an actual prairie fire, and fewer still have had the rare opportunity to actually light and control the FLAMES IN THE FLINT HILLS. At Grandview Ranch, native tall grass prairie is purposely managed to provide a high quality spring pasture burn. This annual event is scheduled on a carefully chosen date to provide the best environmental results. This is an authentic, exciting, hands-on educational experience, so bring your camera and your sense of adventure!

"Thank you so much for your hospitality in allowing Bill and me to be with you for your 'Flames in the Flint Hills!'  The whole event was great!  Both the afternoon and evening burns were spectacular and exciting.  Thank goodness for digital cameras, I just kept firing (no pun)!"  Dixon and Bill, Colorado

HOT MUSIC

Millbrook BoysThe concert by the Millbrooks is a very special event in its own right. Their all-acoustic performance is up close and personal. As you sit on sweet smelling hay bales in an old limestone barn, their bluegrass, old-time, folk and gospel music will take you back to the pioneer days in the Flint Hills.

"As Mike Lanzrath stood at the edge of a windblown prairie one sunny afternoon, he fiddled with a book of matches. 'It don't get no better than this,' he said in anticipation. In seconds, a firestorm soared up to 20 feet high, crackling across the prairie." (The Wall Street Journal, 5/9/05)
