TALLGRASS PRAIRIE INTERPRETIVE
TOUR
An integrated
interpretive trip through the Flint Hills featuring an authentic
concern for wildlife, indigenous plants and animals. On foot,
horseback or a four-wheel ATV, watch for coyote, deer, collared
lizards, turkey, or a seldom-seen bobcat.
Birds abound on the
open prairies and rolling fields, around the small waterways and in
the shady woodlands. Bullbats, Bluebirds, Buntings, Bewick’s Wrens,
Prairie Chickens, Yellow Billed Cuckoos, Upland Plovers, Great Blue
Herons and many more may be seen and heard.
Come to understand how the interaction of rock, fire, grass,
and grazing animals has produced the richest grassland in the world,
the Tallgrass Prairie of the Kansas Flint Hills, and shaped the
cowboy culture and farming and ranching traditions of the area.
“Thoughts of
prairie, soft Southern wind, gentle horses and your interesting and
educational dialogue will always be one of our most pleasant
memories.” Jack Z. and Rhea K., Bolton CT
WILDFLOWER TOURS
Walk or ride through spectacular native flowers and grasses.
Learn about nature’s pharmacy and food store. See what Native Americans and early
settlers used for food and medicine. Identify Chigger Weed,
Rattle Box, Calf Slobbers, Bearded Tongue, Antelope Horn, Ice Cream
Plant, Compass Plant, and more.
Push through tall grasses, up to eight feet, and identify Big
Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Switch, and Indian Grasses. Photograph
popular herbs, such as Echinacea and St. John’s Wort growing in their
native environments.
Plants flower at different times depending on factors like
rainfall, final freeze, hours of daylight, and temperatures. In as
little as two weeks one flower's season may be past, so, if there are
specific flowers you hope to see, be sure and call ahead to see what's
blooming. |
